This sculpture will commemorate the close relationship the staff and administrators of the Royal Newcastle Hospital had with the Surf Lifesaving Club and Newcastle Beach.

The theme of The Promenade represents the importance of the site as a historically favourite place for Novocastrians to promenade and gaze out to sea and the nearby cliff top as a place of importance for the Newcastle local aboriginal community groups.
These sculptural works will form part of the extensive new public domain at The Royal and will enhance the sense of place experienced by visitors to the site, residents, local and international tourists and pedestrians passing through or by The Royal.

The works must first and foremost be strong examples of contemporary Australian sculpture. Interpretation the important themes above will be required but can be abstract and should not compromise the art.

In addition to that, they must relate to the public domain and the surrounding architecture, be of suitable materials and construction for the coastal environment, be safe and of manageable maintenance and be of a scale suitable for their location.

To facilitate community involvement the submissions will be available for public voting. The public voting will create a shortlist of the three favourite works for each commission. The selection panel will have the ability to award one wildcard entry into the shortlist.

The shortlisted artists will be provided $500 for materials and be required to create a maquette which will be judged by the selection panel to award the final commission. The selection panel will exclude any submissions from the short listing round if they do not meet the criteria or do not adequately interpret themes of the site’s history.

This is an opportunity for an artist to contribute to the important heritage of Newcastle and to provide a lasting addition to the cultural and physical landscape.
