With a CBD bounded by world famous beaches, Newcastle has a unique
spirit living in the people, the culture and surrounding environment.
The Royal Newcastle Hospital has held a significant place in the hearts of Novocastrians for almost 2 centuries. The rich history of the site and the many stories played out within her corridors will be forever etched into our memories.
Her time as a place of birth, respite and renewal will be fondly remembered and her place in the pages of history will be firmly entrenched. To this end Mirvac has commenced a comprehensive Interpretation Strategy, which aims to capture the countless amazing facets of The Royal during her many years of service to the broader Hunter community.
From her time as a convict jail, through to her early days as Newcastle’s first public hospital, we have endeavoured to capture The Royal’s remarkable life and important contribution to the development of Newcastle.
The Royal has been captured on film and paper, recordings of past employees and patients have been secured, original architectural drawings and blue prints have been provided to The University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Health and vast physical pieces of her history have been harvested for future use within the site and other key public spaces.
Internationally renowned Social Planner, Dr John Montgomery has been engaged to develop the strategy in consultation with the many stakeholders of The Royal and implementation of the strategy has already commenced.
