History & Place
Originally, we looked at the history of the area including the Ebsworth family for which the street and building owe their name. The Ebsworths were significant wool brokers who ran a large wool washing business in the Green Square area in the late 1800’s. They also supplied wool to their own tweed factory which was one of the largest in Australia in the 1860’s.
Our design concept for the lobbies draws on the influences of the site including references to the industrial nature of the area and the wool washing factories. Although referencing the industrial heritage of the area, the concrete panelling along with the warm timber and bronze tones create an inviting hotel -like feel to the lobbies.
The Journey Through
Upon entering the lobbies from Ebsworth Street, you are welcomed by a sense of arrival with the lobby glazing recessed back from the front building line. This interstitial space softens the interface between public and private domain and offers a unique experience before entering into the building.
The repetitive vertical rhythm of the hardwood timber screen is prominent on entering the lobbies. The choice of timber brings a contemporary and sleek finish. The warm walnut tones of these timber screens are repeated against a feature wall in each lobby.

The timber vertical battens of these feature walls, sit in front of mirrored panels providing a subtle depth to the entry of each lobby.

Generally the ceiling heights of the lobbies are 4.5 to 5m high which provides a grand scale when entering the building. The ceilings of the lobbies are finished in a composite mirrored panel called Dibond which further enhances the scale & feel of a luxury hotel. These ceiling panels reflect the space below, and where a sculptural pendant drops from the ceiling, it is repeated and seems to continue up through the ceiling.
The concrete panelled lift walls are broken at the lift call button panel which is an inlaid natural white marble which continues as a vertical panel between the lift doors. The lift doors and stainless steel panels above are a bronze tone. Within the lift cars the warm bronze continues with bronze colourback glass and golden Laminam panels. The floor finish of the cars looks like a warm travertine and continues out through the lobbies. The stairs, lift threshold and edge border are a darker charcoal tile.

The warm timber is offset by full height concrete panels to the remainder of the lobby walls, providing a contrast in texture & creating an industrial, modern feel to the lobbies.
