Portrait photography is about 'capturing a moment that perfectly defines an individual'.
For the photographer, it requires a different skill to other types of photography, that is: good people skills. Portrait photography puts the subject in a position of vulnerability. The photographer needs to be able to engage with them in a way to put them at ease, so they can relax enough to be themselves. The photographer can then ‘capture the moment’. Every photographer also has to deal with lighting, location, camera equipment and settings, and then there's the technical knowledge of how and when to break the rules, to give the shot their own personal artistic touch. If the photographer can achieve that, it’s going to be a great shot every time.
